Mornington Football & Netball Club

April 2014

 

On the 31st March Norm Robinson President of the Mornington Football Netball Club assisted by Kevin Cahalane visited the Mornington Fire Station and presented the Brigade with 25 memberships for the Mornington Football Netball Club.Norm addressed the Fire Brigade and praised the Members of their efforts over the summer period and offered the Memberships as a thank you for the services that the Mornington Brigade have delivered not only the local community, but to the communities across the State of Victoria over the summer period.In response Operations Officer Arthur Haynes thanked Norm and Kevin and asked them to take back to the Mornington Football Netball Club the gratitude from the Mornington Fire Brigade of such a well-intended gesture to which will enhance the relationships of the two organisations now and in years to come.

Hazardous Materials Training

As part of the brigade’s annual training program for 2014 B shift facilitated Hazmat awareness skills maintenance over the evenings of 24th & 31st March. The 2 week program finished with a practical drill scenario where members responding in the 1st arriving Pumper appliance were required to don splash suits & perform an emergency decontamination & evacuation of an exposed worker.

Unit Fire - Koorootang Retirement Village, Mount Martha.

At approximately 1230hrs on 6th April 2014 Mornington Fire Brigade attended a Fire at Unit 80 in Koorootang Retirement Village 183 Osborne Drive Mornington. On arrival the brigade observed the following conditions: Thick smoke issuing from the roof, front door & windows of unit 80, Approximately 70% of the unit was involved in fire which had also extended into the roof, The adjoining units 81 & 79 were under threat of possible fire spread 3 x Mornington Fire Brigade Appliances, 1 x Mt Martha Fire Brigade appliance & a total of 3 career staff & 12 volunteer firefighters responded to the fire. The Incident Controller - Senior Station Officer Troy Thornton said: The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes, The owner of the unit was not home at the time of the fire, Fire crews had rescued & administered oxygen to the owners cat which was found in the unit fire upon entry & was suffering from smoke inhilation CFA Fire Investigators who attended the scene determined that the fire originated from a kitchen appliance. Senior Station Officer Troy Thornton said this is a timely reminder that household appliances should be unplugged or switched off at the powerpoint when not in use.
